pergola.jpgAn outdoor pergola is a standing structure which typically is used for shading or cover a specific area in an outdoor living space. The two distinct design models pergolas are described as being either free standing or attached to a solid wall, such as the wall of your home. Pergolas can be designed in a combination of different shapes and sizes, the most common design being a square or a rectangle.

A free standing pergola gives you the flexibility of being capable to cover one area of your garden, patio, backyard or pool. It will also be a great place to relax and entertain. For example, you can have a patio space that is build near to your swimming pool decking. A pergola can be built above this area, regardless of the design of the patio, for the purpose of decoration and shade. It’s always beautiful to look at and offers much comfort on very hot sunny days.

It could be attached directly on the side of your house like to a porch covering. Pergolas can also be placed free standing directly next to the house, say, to shade a portion of the pathway up the side of your house or a sunny patio.
After the pergola is located in the desired area, it can then be beautifully build with an array of arbor vines, plants and flowers. The mostly used vines are roses or wisteria that add beauty to any type of pergola design.

how-to-erect-pergola-posts0.jpgOnce you select the location for the pergola, mark the placement of the four posts. Use a post-hole digger or a two-person auger to dig holes to a depth of 24 inches and width of 9 inches. Insert some inches of gravel to the bottom of the holes for drainage. Introduce 4×4 posts into the holes. Make sure the posts are level and vertical. Attach temporary 2×4 bracing to hold in place. Mix fast-drying cement in accordance to manufacturer’s information and pour in holes. Allow cure for 24 hours.

Step 2: Attach Support Beams

Cut support beams from 2×10 boards to span the pergola posts. To produce a decorative aspect on the end of the support beams, draw a straight or curved design on the wood and cut along the line with a jigsaw. Temporarily clamp in place while holes are drilled through the beams and posts. Attach the beams to the posts using 3-inch lag bolts.
