However, it’s extremely important you use products that are considered “safe” for the wood. If you don’t it could leave a residue and create problems. Once the stripping is finished you have to sand everything down. This is much easier, but don’t forget to vacuum up all the dust before applying any solvent. 1. Your Budget
It’s a lot cheaper to build your own boat than it is to buy one, at least in most cases. In order to make sure that you don’t go overboard, however, you’ll need to set a budget for your project in order to help you decide what materials to buy and how large of a boat you can afford to build.

It should go without saying, but you’ll need wood to build your small boat; namely marine plywood (since again, it should go without saying that the materials used to build your boat should be waterproof). You’ll also need boat building sawdust, copper wire, marine epoxy, fiberglass cloth and paint or varnish. The exact materials you’ll need to build a small wooden boat, however, will depend on the specific design you’re using for your project.

3. Tools
You’re going to need some basic woodworking tools as well. You may need others depending on the plans you’re using, but the basics include: a drill, a pair of pliers, wire cutters, a jigsaw and a pair of protective goggles for everyone involved in building the boat.

4. Skills
The type and level of skill involved in building a small wooden boat depend on the type and size of boat you want. A dinghy, dory or jon boat all call for different designs and different levels of skill; always look over plans carefully to make sure that the complexity of the project is something which you can handle with your level of skill as a woodworker.

5. Design
The design is everything when it comes to woodworking projects. Unless you’re a master craftsman (and even if you are), having a design to work from will save you a lot of time, effort and frustration from having to guess how everything should fit together. Especially if you’ve never build a boat before, you should use a well made boat plan for your project if you want to make it as easy as possible and ensure that the end product is a usable boat.
